Uno degli impianti di un motore più soggetti a corrosione è l' impianto di raffreddamento, infatti l' acqua di mare è il fluido freddo che attraverso lo scambiatore di calore raffredda il circuito chiuso di acqua dolce. L' impianto di raffreddamento è composto da:

1. Scambiatore di calore
2. Pompa acqua mare
3. Pompa acqua dolce
4. Tubolature
5. Prese a mare

I materiali ferrosi sono soggetti a corrosione quando sono in ambiente salino, inoltre la pompa aspira dal mare acqua e sporcizia di piccole dimensioni, si capisce quindi che la manutenzione riguarda sia il mantenimento dei materiali sia la pulizia interna di tali componenti.
