Appartata dai flussi turistici, l’isola della Giudecca a Venezia è costituita da una fondamenta continua che costeggia il Canale della Giudecca e fronteggia le Zattere.
Considerata fino a poco tempo fa un quartiere periferico e povero, negli ultimi anni ha visto alcuni interventi di riqualificazione di edifici industriali, adibiti ad abitazioni, laboratori e atelier. Ci sono alcune gallerie d’arte, un teatro e un orto urbano. Quasi inesistenti le attività serali rivolte agli abitanti.
Gli abitanti della Giudecca sono “chiusi” nelle loro routine quotidiane e c’è scarso dialogo tra la cittadinanza e l’arte contemporanea, presente in città con la Biennale e le Università. Gli studenti, finiti gli studi lasciano la città, mentre la popolazione urbana, concentrata a Mestre e Marghera è restia a raggiungere la Giudecca a causa della lentezza dei trasporti pubblici.
Inserendosi nel contesto territoriale appena descritto, il progetto BOAT si rivolge a famiglie, bambini, anziani, studenti ed artisti che vivono sull’isola, cosí come agli abitanti di Venezia, Mestre e Marghera per rispondere a un bisogno primario di tutti, ovvero uno spazio collettivo auto-organizzato, intergenerazionale dove poter sperimentare pratiche di vita attiva e di produzione culturale.
Il progetto si propone più in generale di creare le condizioni per far ri-emergere e sviluppare desideri latenti, aspirazioni naufragate, competenze e sensibilità assopite del corpo sociale, col fine di suscitare, attraverso processi partecipativi, una progressiva autoproduzione nell’ambito della vita culturale e sociale.
Per innescare questi processi il progetto prevede l’allestimento di uno spazio polifunzionale, aperto a tutti, recuperando la mensa del cantiere.
Oltre all’autoproduzione materiale che spazia dall’ambito tecnologico, a quello artigianale ed artistico, si unisce un lavoro di scambio, collaborazione e formazione intellettuale.
Verranno organizzati dei laboratori creativi e altre attività eterogenee che coinvolgano tutto il quartiere, i bambini, gli anziani, gli studenti. A queste attività saranno affiancate residenze d’artista, collaborazioni con professionisti e l’attivazione di uno spazio espositivo per i giovani artisti.
Intenzione del progetto è anche sviluppare una rete di solidarietà tra varie realtà che operano sul territorio, dai piccoli produttori locali alle realtà associative vicine.
Il progetto inoltre sta avviando un’intesa con il Cantiere Faldis e altre aziende con sede sull’isola per il recupero di materiali di scarto, per la condivisione di strumenti, competenze e servizi, e la reciproca promozione delle proprie attività.
Tutto ciò tenendo al centro dell’impegno la cura verso l’ambiente in cui viviamo, della salute fisica e psicologica del singolo, così come della comunità.
Caratteri distintivi del progetto BOAT sono:
- La volontà di incentivare lo scambio tra antichi saperi (maestranze / addetti cantiere navale) e nuovi mestieri (artisti / giovani creativi) allo scopo di coinvolgere l’artista e il fruitore nell’elaborazione e nella realizzazione pratica della ricerca culturale;
- Sperimentazione di azioni culturali a carattere partecipativo mirate all’apertura del cantiere alla comunità locale;
- Attivazione di progetti artistici per perseguire la costruzione di una dimensione comunitaria nel contesto urbano;
- Progettazione e allestimenti di dispositivi artistici site specific;
- Promozione e diffusione di approfondimenti teorici, anche in rapporto ai saperi tradizionali, sui pensieri della Hacker Ethic e della DIY Ethic.
In conclusione il progetto BOAT potrà creare opportunità di lavoro e sviluppo del territorio con un conseguente miglioramento della qualità della vita della comunità.

New life to Giudecca: the BOAT project
Ancient knowledge and new skills
The island of Giudecca in Venice, secluded from flows of tourisms, it consists of a “fondamenta” that continues along the Giudecca Canal and faces the Zattere.
It is considered until recently a poor suburb, in the last few years it has seen some redevelopment of industrial buildings, assigned as residences, laboratories and workshops. There are several art galleries, a theater and an urban vegetable garden. The evening activities for the residents are almost nonexistent.
The inhabitants of Giudecca are "closed" in their daily routines and there is lack of dialogue between the citizens and contemporary art, that it is presents in cities with the Biennale and the Universities. The students finished their studies leave the city, while the urban population, concentrated in Mestre and Marghera is reluctant to reach the island of Giudecca because of the slowness of public transport.
Interfering with the local context just described, the BOAT project will appeal to families, children, seniors, students and artists who live on the island, as well as to the inhabitants of Venice, Mestre and Marghera to answer a basic need of all, that is an intergenerational, self-organized, collective area, where they can experiment practices of active life and cultural production.
The project aims more generally to create the conditions to do re-emerge and develop latent desires, aspirations wrecked, skills and sensitivity dormant of the society, with the aim of arousing a progressive self-production as part of the cultural life and social through participatory processes.
To activate these processes, the project involves the construction of a multipurpose space, recovering the canteen of our shipyard that It will be open to all.
In addition to self-material production that it ranges from the technological to that handcraft and artistic field, joins an exchange work, collaboration and intellectual formation.
It will be organized creative workshops and other different activities that will involve all the neighborhood, children, seniors, students. To these activities will be supported artist residencies, collaborations with professionals, and the activation of an exhibition area for young artists.
Intention of the project is also to develop a network of solidarity between the various organizations working in the area, from small local producers to nearby associations
Moreover the project is launching an understanding with the Faldis Shipyard and other companies located on the island, for the recovery of waste materials. For sharing tools, skills and services, and the mutual promotion of own activities.
So there is a commitment to care for the environment, for the physical and psychological health of the individual, as well as the community.
The distinctive characteristics of BOAT project, are:
- A willingness to promote the exchange between ancient knowledge (workers / employees of the shipyard) and new professions (artists / creative young people) in order to involve the artist and the viewer in the development and practical implementation of cultural research;
- Experimentation of cultural actions to character participatory to targeted opening of the shipyard to the local community;
- Activation of arts projects to pursue the construction of a community dimension in the urban context;
- Designing and installations of artistic devices, site specific
- Promotion and dissemination of theoretical insights, also in relation to traditional knowledge, on the thoughts of the Hacker Ethic and Ethic DIY.
In conclusion, the BOAT project will create employment opportunities and development of the area resulting in an improved quality of life of the community.
