Nel tempo alghe e altri organismi aumentano la rugosità della carena contribuendo ad incrementare la resistenza al moto di avanamento, le conseguenze sono moto ondoso, quindi maggior energia per raggiungere la velocità voluta, il risultato si traduce economicamente in una maggior spesa di carburante... ecco perchè la manutenzione di questi mezzi risulta conveniente all' armatore.
